Basil donates €11.000 to World Bicycle Relief
Basil and World Bicycle Relief work together in spreading the cycling joy at Eurobike 2015
“Help us spread the cycling joy”! That was Basil’s appeal during the 2015 Eurobike in Friedrichshafen last August. With this appeal the Dutch bicycle fashion label wasn’t just pointing out their new branding and collection, they where also referring to the purchase of the Basil Promo bag. This bag was being sold in order to make a contribution towards the charity World Bicycle Relief.
Basil has been supporting the World Bicycle Relief charity for four years now. During this time, the Basil Promo bag has become a known phenomenon at Eurobike. When acquiring this beloved gadget, people were asked to give a voluntary donation of at least 3 Euro.
Proceeds obtained from Basil Promo bag exceed expectations
The true Basil Promo bag fans were lined up every morning, waiting to get a hold of the newest design to add to their collection. Some people were so enthusiastic, they ended up purchasing multiple bags (as a business gift for employees or customers, for example). For this year’s Promo bag, Basil developed two versions. It was exhilarating to see how several people were walking around the event with both bags hanging over their shoulders.
All the proceeds are donated to World Bicycle Relief; this year’s donation amounted to €11.000. This sum has already been donated to the charity. Kristina Jasiunaite, Managing Director of World Bicycle Relief said the following: “On behalf of World Bicycle Relief I would like to say a genuine thank you to the Basil team. With the proceeds acquired through this collaboration 100 bikes can be purchased and donated. This will enable around 500 people to create a better life for themselves in Africa. Therefore Basil and World Bicycle Relief are spreading the cycling joy together!”.
World Bicycle Relief
As a result of the Tsunami in Sri Lanka, SRAM and Trek Bicycles founded World Bicycle Relief in 2005. World Bicycle Relief’s mission is to offer people possibilities that support their independence and livelihood, aided by a bicycle.
A bicycle shortens the several hour long trip to school tremendously and is therefore an important advantage when receiving an education.
As of today the organization is represented in 13 African counties, the Philippines, Indonesia and Peru and they have supplied a total figure of almost 200.000 bicycles. Moreover World Bicycle Relief educates mechanics on the spot to assure that maintenance can be carried out and that spare parts can be assembled. The robust Buffalo-Bike is being assembled in five African countries. Its clearly visible that this bicycle has been designed to withstand extreme conditions. It’s a bike made to carry heavy loads and it’s suitable for dirt roads in bad shape. It weighs 23 kg, has a steal frame, no gears, back pedal brakes, wide 26 inch tires and a luggage carrier that can withstand up to 100 kg.
1 BIKE COSTS £90 – ON AVERAGE THIS CHANGES 5 PEOPLE’S LIVES
In some African countries a bicycle can improve the lives of people in unbelievable ways. This was proven when the World Bicycle Relief charity supplied up to 200.000 bicycles. Basil’s donation has made it possible for World Bicycle Relief to provide bicycles for people who are unable to purchase a bicycle themselves.
