Basil and World Bicycle Relief spread the cycling joy together at Eurobike 2016

“Help us spread the cycling joy” was the call from Basil during Eurobike 2016 last August in Friedrichshafen. The Dutch cycling fashion label was not just referring to its new collection but also to the purchase of the Basil Promo Bag, with funds raised going to the World Bicycle Relief charity.

This year, Basil’s pay-off ‘spread the cycling joy’ had particular significance. Not just because of Basil’s 40th anniversary but also due to the new collection of fashionable bicycle bags. The range on display now meets the high requirements for waterproofing and the new Promo Bag, which was specially developed for Eurobike, is also made from waterproof material. So, whatever the weather, fashion and a 100% waterproof design are now combined!

Major interest in new ‘Basil waterproof Promo Bag’
This was the fifth successive year that Basil has supported World Bicycle Relief. The Basil Promo Bag has now become a well-known phenomenon at Eurobike, with a voluntary donation of €4 being requested to secure one of these popular gadgets.

The real Basil Promo Bag fans were queuing up each morning to get their hands on the latest design to add to their collection of Promo Bags. Some visitors were so enthusiastic that they bought several bags (as gifts for staff or clients for example). Basil had two new designs this year and it was very rewarding to see how the various visitors walked around the fair with both designs around their shoulders.

100% of all funds raised go to World Bicycle Relief; this year the total amount raised from the Basil Promo Bags sold was € 4104.57. Basil has since gifted this amount to World Bicycle Relief. “On behalf of World Bicycle Relief a sincere word of thanks to the Basil Team”, says Kristina Jasiunaite, Managing Director. “With the funds raised from this collaboration, World Bicycle Relief will be able to buy and gift around 30 bicycles to help around 150 people in Africa build a better life. That’s how Basil and its customers are working together to spread the cycling joy!”

World Bicycle Relief
In 2005, following the Tsunami in Sri Lanka, SRAM and Trek Bicycles set up World Bicycle Relief. The mission of World Bicycle Relief is to give people the opportunity of independence and to earn a livelihood with the help of a bicycle.
A bicycle enormously reduces the time it takes to get to school and is therefore a major benefit to education.
The organisation is now represented in 13 African countries, the Philippines, Indonesia and Peru and has supplied almost 200,000 bicycles. WBR also trains local mechanics in order to be certain that the bicycles can be maintained and spare parts fitted. The robust Buffalo-Bike is being assembled in five African countries. It is clear to see that this bike has been designed for extreme loads. It is capable of transporting heavy loads on poor quality sandy roads. It weighs 23 kg, has a steel frame, no gears, it has a backpedal-brake, 26-inch tyres and a luggage carrier suitable for loads of up to 100 kg.

In some African countries a bicycle can improve the lives of people in incredible ways, which is something the World Bicycle Relief (WBR) organisation has proven almost 200,000 times. With Basil’s donation, WBR will fortunately be able to once again make a great number of bicycles available to people who would not otherwise be able to afford a bike.
